If it's not a spreadsheet simulator like EVE Online I may consider it. Somehow I seem to recall some bad opinions of this game, but that could have been during a beta period. I don't own a mac, but thanks to Steam Play, it was just as good as a sale on any other site.

A mac gaming website had a sale on a Steam key for Civilization V. I recently benefited from mac ports in an usual way. Looks like my time is about to be velcroed to Elite.damn you! No one blew me up, so I saved and shut down. Started Open Play an hour ago.and flew around a bit. I have a ThrustMaster HOTAS, and dinked around with mappings during Training.

Wish there was a Windows version so I could ditch TARGET.Īrrghh.gave in and bought Elite on Steam last night, Windows version. It's not free, but it's worth the purchase price, IMO. The Warthog and my pedals are supported natively by the OS X version of Elite, but ControllerMate lets me duplicate the extra functionality I get in Windows from Thrustmaster's TARGET software-things like executing an action on the activate and deactivate motion of a toggle switch, or assigning different functions to the same switch depending on context, or assigning macros or repeat presses to buttons. That isn't sufficient to explain games where we know significant effort has gone into Mac support, such as Blizzard's games. We've also heard from developers trying to optimize for OS X about problems in OS X's drivers.Īnyway I was waiting for the Mac version to come out before buying, so I guess I'll see now.Īnd just as a quick note, I've had excellent luck with ControllerMate in OS X for mapping extra commands to my Warthog HOTAS. You are often comparing a heavily optimized Windows version with an under/unoptimized (or even worse, a winebottled) Mac version. (Of course that's never been enough to make the hassle of booting into Windows worth it to me.)

I've always found that games perform noticeably better under Windows. Hmmm, that sounds quite different from my experiences with graphics performance in Windows vs.

(If you're on a macbook air or something with an integrated GPU.sorry.) My experience with the Mac beta has been that if your computer runs it acceptably in Boot Camp, it'll work pretty much the same with the same graphical settings and resolution in OS X. So, does Elite run well enough on MacOS to make it worth not bothering with the reboot into Windows? *Except asteroid fields you'll want to clear from those first so you don't spawn in the middle of one the next time you log in Unfortunately the game doesn't pause the timer when you aren't playing. You can exit the game at any time, though missions have an expiration time of 4-5 real-world hours. In fact, there are certain game types devoted to that (piracy).Īnd it isn't like an MMO where you have to "log off" at the inn to be safe or something*. This is very much a game for loners though no need to worry about upsetting other players. There's also a "private group" mode where you only see some people I think there are a few big PVE groups out there for people who don't want to deal with the trolls in Open. While there is no traditional "offline" mode (the game needs to connect to the cloud to run the system simulation), there is a "solo play" mode where you will not see another player.

Basically, can I play for just short periods without disrupting the scene and making people mad?Ībsolutely. Is it proper etiquette to stay until certain points in the game. I am wondering about these more intricate and involved games. I used to play Quake 3 online, but those were only five or so minutes per set, and even if someone left in the middle, there were always others to blast. I mean like, two or three times a month, for maybe an hour or two. Is it cool for someone to join in only sporadically.
